Casamento e celibato.
695. Será
contrário à lei da natureza o casamento, isto é, a união permanente de dois
seres?
“É um progresso
na marcha da humanidade. ”
696. Que efeito
teria sobre a sociedade humana a abolição do casamento?
“Seria uma
regressão à vida dos animais.”
A união livre e
fortuita dos sexos é o estado de natureza. O casamento constitui um dos
primeiros atos de progresso nas sociedades humanas, porque estabelece a
solidariedade fraterna e se observa entre todos os povos, se bem que em
condições diversas. A abolição do casamento seria, pois, o retorno à infância
da humanidade, e colocaria o homem abaixo mesmo de certos animais, que lhe dão
o exemplo de uniões constantes.
697. Está na lei
da natureza, ou somente na lei humana, a indissolubilidade absoluta do
casamento?
“É uma lei
humana muito contrária à da natureza. Mas os homens podem modificar suas leis;
só as da natureza são imutáveis.”
698. O celibato
voluntário representa um estado de perfeição meritório aos olhos de Deus?
“Não, e os que
assim vivem por egoísmo desagradam a Deus e enganam o mundo.”
699. Da parte de
certas pessoas, o celibato não será um sacrifício que fazem com o fim de se
votarem, de modo mais completo, ao serviço da humanidade?
“Isso é muito
diferente. Eu disse: por egoísmo. Todo sacrifício pessoal é meritório, quando
feito para o bem. Quanto maior o sacrifício, tanto maior o mérito.”
Não é possível
que Deus se contradiga, nem que ache mau o que ele próprio fez. Nenhum mérito,
portanto, pode haver na violação da sua lei. Mas se o celibato, em si mesmo,
não é um estado meritório, outro tanto não se dá quando constitui, pela
renúncia às alegrias da família, um sacrifício praticado em prol da humanidade.
Todo sacrifício pessoal com vistas ao bem, sem qualquer ideia egoísta, eleva o
homem acima da sua condição material.

695. Is
marriage, the permanent union of two beings, contrary to the law of nature?
“It is progress
that has been achieved by humankind.”
696. If
marriages were abolished, what would be the effect on human society?
“Regressing to
the level of wild animals and savages.” The free and unplanned union of the
sexes is natural. Marriage is one of the first results of progress in human
societies because it establishes fraternal unity, found in every nation and
among every ethnic group though under different conditions. If marriage were
abolished, humanity would regress to infancy, and would place humans below a
few animals that demonstrate having lifelong fidelity to their mates.
697. Is the
binding nature of marriage a law of nature, or is it only dictated by human
law?
“It is human law
that contradicts the law of nature. Human laws change, while natural law is
constant.”
698. Is
voluntary celibacy commendable in God’s eyes?
“No, those who
are single for selfish reasons displease God and mislead others.”
699. For some
people, can celibacy be a sacrifice they make to devote themselves to serving
humanity completely?
“That is a very
different matter, I said ‘for selfish reasons’. When carried out for a noble
purpose, any sort of personal sacrifice is laudable. The greater the sacrifice,
the greater the merit.”
God cannot be in
contradiction with, or find fault in, creation. Therefore, God cannot commend
any violation of Divine or Natural laws. While celibacy alone is not
praiseworthy, it may become such when depriving oneself the joy of having a
family is a sacrifice made in the interest of humanity. Every sacrifice of
personal interest, when made for the good of others and no self-interest
whatsoever, raises human beings above the level of their physical condition.
